Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and center of commerce and shipping. It resides beside the Guayas River, which also happens to be the largest in the Pacific coast of South America. The River has also served an important role in the city's fishing industry, as well as a buffer against saltwater and erosion.
What's alarming, however, is the fact that only half of the city's wastewater undergo treatment; the rest of the wastewater goes directly to the river.
This is the first that I have heard of any wastewater treatment in Ecuador.
