President Correa Orders Army to Repair Roads

President Rafael Correa declared a national road emergency and has order the Army to use the money originally destined to honor foreign debt to begin construction instead. Correa fully believes that Armed Forces in times of peace should be helping social and economic development.

Lawyers Threaten Fines In Banana Wars

Europe is imposing illegally high tariffs to protect banana producers in the Canaries Islands, Caribbean territories and its former African and Caribbean colonies according to Ecuador. This has caused them to ask lawyers at the World Trade Organization to threaten finces and sanctions. After 15 years of battling this along other nations may now join.

300 Flee Violence

Violence in southern Colombia has caused more than 300 people to flee across the San Juan River to a small norther Ecuadorian town of Chical. Humanitarian workers have been deployed to Chical to distribute emergency items and food rations.

Port Authority Established

The Ecuadorian Defense Minister stated that the country would be establishing a porth authority to improve controls in its Amazon jungle border with Columbia. Authorities estimated that 500,000 illegal Columbians now live in Ecuador and the nation only has 8,000 uniformed officers to fight rebel forces.

Banana Talks on Slow Boat

Ecuador insists that the European Union (EU) import barriers are still too high and have stepped up its fight. One Ecuadorian diplomat stated that Ecuador believes the talks are not going anywhere and even though the case was brought against the EU in the 1990's they remained willing to negotiate.

Vessel of Bahamas Stopped and Searched for Cocaine

The Ecuadorian army has confiscated 60 kg of cocaine found on a Bahamian vessel loaded with bananas. It was loaded in Puerto Boliva and on its way to Hamburg port in Germany. The vessel is the property of former presidential candidate Alvaro Noboa

Ecuador and European Union Still Not Happy

Ecuador contends that the EU import barriers remain too high and have escalated its fight by asking the World Trade Organization to rule in their favour. This move comes on the heels of inconclusive talks between Ecuador and the European Union.

Buddhist Masters Stay in Ecuador

Twelve years ago the first Buddhist master visted the Catholic nation of Ecuador for a one week stay. They are still here and will soon move into the largest Buddhist temple in South America. Never in all their thinking did they expect to take up residence in a Spanish speaking community but stay they did.
