Europe is imposing illegally high tariffs to protect banana producers in the Canaries Islands, Caribbean territories and its former African and Caribbean colonies according to Ecuador. This has caused them to ask lawyers at the World Trade Organization to threaten finces and sanctions. Ecuador contends that the EU import barriers remain too high and have escalated its fight by asking the World Trade Organization to rule in their favour.
